Down the center are some of the lasts surviving grasslands of the Great Plains. Western Kansas is more rural and sparsely inhabited with a lot of open farmland which forms the basis of the economy. Kansas is often the leading producer of wheat, sorghum and sunflowers.
Historically, this was the home of a large number of nomadic Native Americans for whom bison hunting was the mainstay of their survival. Europeans arrived in the 1830s and the area became a hotbed of violence and turbulence with pro-slavery settlers and abolitionists colliding head to head. After the Civil War, waves of immigration turned the prairie into productive farmland.
